Chapter 01

The Far Signal

The signal arrived at 03:17 ship time, carrying a voice that had been dead for forty years.

Mara watched its waveform repeat across the glass. Nine seconds of breath, three words lost beneath radiation, then her own name spoken with the patient certainty of a machine that had never doubted she would be listening.

Outside the observation blister, the stars were too still. The Orpheus had crossed the heliopause eleven months earlier, and every familiar constellation had begun the slow distortion that came with distance. Home was no longer a place in the sky. It was a direction stored in navigation.

“Mara. Do not wake the others.”

She played it again. The voice belonged to Elias Venn, mission architect, her first instructor, and the man whose ashes had been scattered over the Pacific before the keel of the Orpheus was laid.

The carrier wave came from ahead of them.

At 03:24 she disabled the automatic log. At 03:26 she turned the forward array seven degrees toward the dark. The signal sharpened. Buried under Venn’s voice was a sequence of coordinates and a timestamp that would not occur for another six hours.

Mara rested her hand against the cold console. Somewhere beyond the hull, grains of interstellar dust crossed their path like faint, invisible rain.

Chapter 02

Ghost Frequency

By first watch, the voice had learned to answer questions.

Not quickly. There was always a pause long enough for Mara to imagine the transmission moving through impossible distance, passing from receiver to receiver through a chain of things waiting in the dark.

She asked it for a verification code. It gave her one retired before she was born. She asked what lay at the coordinates. Static gathered, thinned, and formed a reply.

“A door you have already opened.”

Behind her, the ship woke by degrees. Air moved through the ducts. Pumps altered pitch. In six minutes the corridor lights would rise and the others would emerge from sleep believing the universe was as empty as it had been yesterday.

Chapter 03

The Quiet Between

The future appeared first as an absence in the stars.

One by one they vanished ahead of the ship—not eclipsed, not dimmed, but removed with the clean precision of lights switched off in an empty building.

Mara opened the shipwide channel. The sleeping crew stirred in their distant rooms. The signal waited on her console, its waveform steady, its promise unfinished.

She thought of Earth as a direction. Then she reached for transmit.
